TEDx Talk - Are We Building the Tools We Can Trust

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science) organised a TEDx Talk titled “Are We Building the Tools We Can Trust?” on 16 April 2026 for fourth-semester students. The session featured Mr Jim Chilton, a technology executive and innovation leader, and was conducted online. It focused on the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in education and society.

During the session, the speaker explained how Artificial Intelligence is transforming learning methods and modern technological practices. He highlighted the increasing role of AI in shaping how students access information and engage with educational resources.

A key emphasis of the talk was the importance of trust in the development and use of AI-based tools. Mr Chilton discussed concerns regarding the reliability of AI-generated information, pointing out that such systems may sometimes produce incorrect or biased responses with a high degree of confidence. He cautioned students against blindly trusting AI outputs without proper verification, especially in academic learning, and decision-making contexts.

The speaker also stressed the importance of collaboration among technology companies, educators, and governments to build trustworthy AI systems. He underscored the need for ethical standards, well-defined guidelines, and the use of accurate, fact-based training data to ensure responsible and safe AI usage.

The session encouraged students to think critically about technology and to understand both the advantages and limitations of Artificial Intelligence. Overall, the talk inspired students to view technological innovation as a responsibility grounded in trust, truth, and accountability.
