Workshop on Green by Design: Building Sustainable AI with Data Science

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science), New Horizon College of Engineering, organised a workshop on “Green by Design: Building Sustainable AI with Data Science” on 24th September 2026 for 5th semester students, led by Dr Niladri Mallick Choudhuri, Founder and CEO of Xellentro Consulting Services LLP. The session provided valuable insights into integrating sustainability principles into AI systems to promote environmentally responsible innovation.

Students were introduced to the concept of sustainable AI and the importance of reducing energy consumption, optimising computational resources, and minimising environmental impact. The speaker emphasised how the “Green by Design” approach transforms AI from a purely performance-driven technology into a responsible innovation partner.

The workshop highlighted the benefits of sustainable AI, including reduced carbon footprint, improved efficiency, lower operational costs, and enhanced resource optimisation. Students learned how data science can support predictive analytics for energy management, climate modelling, and sustainable decision-making.

The session also explored the challenges of implementing sustainable AI, such as high computational costs, lack of standardised sustainability metrics, and difficulties in measuring environmental impact. Discussions covered the trade-offs between model performance and energy efficiency, along with concerns related to data quality, infrastructure limitations, and responsible AI practices.

The speaker stressed the importance of adopting energy-efficient algorithms, carbon-aware computing, and lifecycle-based assessments to overcome these challenges. Career opportunities in green data science, sustainable computing, climate analytics, and energy-efficient AI development were also presented.

The workshop encouraged students to develop technical and sustainability-focused skills to meet emerging industry demands. Overall, the session inspired participants to contribute to environmentally sustainable AI innovation and responsible technological development.
