TEDx Talk - Big Data is Better Data

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science) organised a TEDx Talk titled “Big Data is Better Data” on 27 February 2026. The session featured Mr Kenneth Cukier, a globally recognised technology journalist and author known for his expertise in big data.

Mr Cukier introduced the concept of big data and explained how massive digital information is transforming problem solving across industries. The talk highlighted how growing data availability enables deeper analysis, better predictions, and smarter decision-making. He emphasised that big data consists of large, complex datasets generated from sources such as the internet, sensors, smartphones, and social media.

The speaker demonstrated how analysing large datasets reveals patterns in healthcare, consumer behaviour, transportation, and scientific research. He explained that big data powers machine learning, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics by helping algorithms learn from vast amounts of information. The session also discussed societal benefits, including improved diagnostics, optimised business strategies, and data-driven urban planning.

Alongside the opportunities, Mr Cukier addressed concerns around privacy, ethical use of personal data, and algorithmic transparency. Students were encouraged to develop strong analytical and computational skills to pursue careers in data science and AI. An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to explore the future of data-driven technologies and their global impact.

Overall, the talk provided a comprehensive understanding of how big data is reshaping technology and inspired students to adopt responsible and innovative data practices
